One in Four Jobs Will Change in the Next Five Years, Says New Report

By Reginald, 6 May, 2023

A recent report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) has some big news for the future of work—about 25% of jobs worldwide will undergo significant changes by 2027.

The report, titled The Future of Jobs, is based on a survey of around 800 companies employing over 11 million people across the globe. It analyzed trends based on data from more than 673 million jobs.

So, what’s causing this shift?
The short answer? Technology.

As businesses continue to adopt tools like artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and big data, many roles are expected to change—or disappear altogether. At the same time, new jobs will also be created.

Here’s what the report found:

- Around 69 million jobs are expected to be created by 2027.
- Roughly 83 million jobs will be phased out.

This results in a net loss of about 14 million jobs, or a 2% drop in current global employment.

Humans vs. Machines
Right now, machines are already doing a good chunk of work. The report shows that:

- 34% of tasks are completed by machines
- 66% are still handled by people

But with 75% of companies planning to use AI in the next five years, we can expect even more automation ahead.

Who’s at Risk—and Who’s in Demand?
Jobs that can easily be automated—like bank tellers, secretaries, and data entry clerks—are likely to decline quickly.

On the other hand, roles that involve technology and security are seeing a surge. This includes:

- AI and machine learning specialists
- Cybersecurity experts
- Big data analysts

The Bottom Line
Technology is transforming the job market faster than ever. But it’s not all doom and gloom. While some jobs are going away, new ones are also being created—especially in tech and digital fields.

To stay ahead, workers and employers alike will need to keep learning, adapting, and embracing change. The future of work is coming fast, and it’s powered by innovation.
